Orange You Glad You Adopted?

If your pet was adopted from a shelter, you're my friend! No bones - or soggy catnip toys - about it! We're special people and everybody knows it. Those who know it best, though, lay their furry chins atop our laps and gaze upward with eyes devoted and grateful. "If you find a starving dog and make him prosperous," observed Mark Twain, "he will not bite you. That's the difference between dogs and men." Agreed. I've witnessed this myself and so have you.

The Bissell Pet Foundation plans an October 30-31 pictorial Facebook tribute to pets (and their owners!) who have been rescued by each other. Roxie and I will be there early and we invite you to join us! Take a photo of your adopted pet (cats, too!) bandana-ed in orange, the "official color" of Pet Adoption Month, and post it on the Foundation's page on October 30, 2014. Then come back the next day to see if you're a prize winner!

We'll also be asked to name the organization that made our "fur-ever" match possible. I applaud this heartily. How easy it is for me to do my part in pet rescue, yet how difficult for first respondents who perform the initial tasks of medical and behavioral assessment, as well as fostering and application evaluation before an adoption is approved. Heart wrenching. Heartwarming. All in one.

Our photo gallery of grateful furry faces will assure them it was all worthwhile.
And that's a "yap!"

This is not a sponsored post. I just followed my nose to this gratifying event and wanted to share it!

  1. All of animals have been rescue animals. Love them so much!

  2. My three cats all have different types of origin: one from the humane society, one from a ditch in the country, one from a box in a Walmart parking lot. They're priceless. Too bad I'm not on Facebook to join in on this fun.

  3. What a nice post. I would like to know the statistics on the increase in pet adoptions since the 1970's or so. I'm sure it's been huge because of people like you who get the word out about the joys of pet adoption, along with high profile folks who adopt from shelters. You rarely heard about it years ago, and nobody knew about "puppy mills" either. Things are definitely changing for the better!

  4. What a handsome friend you have there. :-) Over the years, we adopted four dogs from our local shelter. Loved them all, felt privileged to give them a loving home, and can sit here with a smile remembering all our good times with them.

  5. Oh pretty doggie!!! Our grandson Ben just got a dog this summer from the Animal Rescue - she is a delight. We adopted a kitty that someone had dumped out on the road near our house - how in the world can someone do that? She was with us for almost 10 years and sometimes I still walk into the living room and think I see her curled up and sleeping by the rocking chair.

  6. OMG look at that sweet face!!!

And I heard him say ( in quiet doggie language ) "next you know she'll have me doing crafts...just wait. In a month it'll be some dog-print craft, I just know it."

  7. Howdy! :) AND Awwww, he's so sweet. I have a granddog who was also a rescue dog and had just as cute a little kerchief. He's a sweet delight for my grandkids, my elderly mom, and myself. Happy visiting for the Grand Social.

  8. Who can resist those eyes!!! And are you talking about Bissell as in Bissell vacuum cleaner so you can vacuum up all the dog hair that blows like dust bunnies across the room on a warm, breezy day? LOL I have a soft place in my heart for shelter pets. We have a shelter dog we adopted and I wrote a kids' book on adopting a puppy - so that they would learn responsible pet ownership.

  12. Good luck to everyone attending this special function. Have adopted pets myself in the past, and currently share my Grandog - a Saturday Night special featuring German Shepherd, Labrador and Rottweiler characteristics! Not sure we could find an orange bandana in time!

  15. Now I love you even more. :) Anyone who champions shelter animals and adoption of same, well, "that's a star in your crown" as my grandmother used to say. ♥ My long line of adoptees and I thank you for this post. And thank you for sharing it with us at Treasure Box Tuesday. Pinned!

  17. I have to agree - what a face! We used to have 3 cats, and after 6 years of no pets we decided to adopt 2 cats. Sadly, they had to be returned the next day because of allergies. We were heartbroken, but I'd like to believe they found a lovely home. Thank goodness for organizations that enable this to happen.

  19. I wish I saw this post on time to participate! My family has adopted every dog we've ever had... except for tiny Lily, whom I informally "rescued" directly from my old roomates who were going to take her to the pound.
