"Snow Problems Here!"

They say that if you cannot find happiness, you should make your own. The same applies to "snow-less" snowmen, too, I suppose! Once the thrill of Christmas is over, building those iconic little sentinels - and going back to school :( - are the only things left to do!

On a recent Saturday afternoon, I welcomed both happiness and snowmen in the form of a granddaughter pair seated at a kitchen table laden with an abundance of pretty paper scraps. Who even cared that outside, nature gave us scanty, ice-encrusted snow to see? Not we!
(Yes. I know. Bad English. But it rhymes!)

Hot chocolate first. Then plated chunks of cheese and fruit. A cookie, too, to fuel us for the work ahead. Bree likes paper punches; Kaylee goes to town on glue sticks. And grandma saw an opportunity to introduce some rudimentary principles and elements of design. All three of us were in artsy-craftsy heaven!

Size and Shape: Rectangles! There they are! - one 7" x 22" biggie for the body, a smaller one to make the hat. We see circles everywhere, and those come large and small, plus several sizes in between!

Color: Our snowmen sing in vivid hue, we have warm and we have cool!

Line: Strong horizontals define the hat and scarf, and diagonal arms keep our eyes moving - there's nothing static here!

To be honest, the little ladies didn't care much about my academic babbling. They were having too much fun picking paper, punching, pasting, and posing for personable pictures!

Nope! "Snow problems here!"

  1. Good morning, Your granddaughters are adorable. I love the cute snowman they created. What a cute project. No snow here, everything is brown. Have a happy weekend!

  2. Wow - two really cute snowmen and two beautiful granddaughters. You're living right, Joyce. I like the idea that the snowmen are rectangles and not circles, and I love the eyelashes. The girls, well the girls, are perfect just as they are. :-) Not enough snow here for a snowman. The ground is white but it is raining today.

  3. They are indeed cute. One of my grands who used to play with me art, tea parties and such has just been accepted to U of Ky. School of Architecture. Like to think our angles and rations we used to do was her showing her talent for architecture. I so miss those days but enjoy all the high school and college stuff going on. One grandson who we used to play "travel" with is going to Peru for 2 weeks to finish this college year.

  7. I love the plan for making snowfolks. I'm sure the girls will remember your lessons down through the years. They are all adorable. You are such a fun grandma! Two of our grandsons are moving away from crafting with Grammy - one is playing the viola in 5th grade orchestra (we went to his concert on Thursday) and the other is into cooking and has a cute-as-a-button girlfriend now.

  8. I love your rhymes and the snowmen...and your grand kids are gorgeous. It's so much fun to create with them isn't it? All sunny and summery here in the Land of Oz but we could create our own snowmen like you did. Great idea. :)

  10. What an adorable project for the kids to do. No snow here, although cold for southern Florida. Your grandkids are so cute.

  11. Adorable! But in my head -- Amara is still the age that Bree is in this picture and Bree is still Kaylee's age! They are growing up way too fast but at least you keep getting new ones!

  12. I love snowmen. We have 3 feet of that fluffy, white stuff as I'm commenting. As soon as I can get out of my house, I'll spend some time making one in my yard. These are adorable and so are the grandchildren. Thanks for joining Sunday's Best.

  13. It only snows once every 10 years around here, and we got snow last year so I think this will be the only snowmen we could make this year. Thanks for sharing on the #HomeMattersParty - I hope you will join us, next week.

  16. I totally understand why your grand-daughters love paper punches and glue sticks. There's something very satisfying about pressing a hole punch through a sheet of paper and seeing all those wonderful shapes appearing. And glue sticks? They're just the best. Those snowmen are adorable, but not quite as adorable as those sweet little girls holding them!
